Description
Ultrasonic Sensor HC-SR04 – Distance Measuring Sensor Module
The HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Sensor is a popular distance-measuring module designed to measure the distance between the sensor and an object using ultrasonic sound waves.
The sensor uses separate transmitter and receiver ultrasonic transducers to send and receive ultrasonic pulses. A compatible microcontroller, such as an Arduino, can calculate the distance by measuring the time taken for the reflected sound wave to return to the sensor.
With its simple 4-pin interface, the HC-SR04 is easy to integrate into robotics, automation, obstacle avoidance, parking sensor prototypes, and DIY electronics projects.

How It Works
- The microcontroller sends a short trigger pulse to the Trig pin.
- The HC-SR04 transmits an ultrasonic pulse.
- The ultrasonic wave reflects from a nearby object.
- The sensor receives the reflected signal through the Echo transducer.
- The duration of the Echo signal is measured by the microcontroller.
- The measured time is used to calculate the distance.
Applications
- Robot obstacle avoidance
- Arduino projects
- Distance measurement
- Object detection
- Automatic doors
- Parking sensor prototypes
- Water-level monitoring prototypes
- Smart robotics

- Security and monitoring projects
- Educational electronics
- DIY embedded systems
Compatibility
The HC-SR04 can be used with compatible:
- Arduino boards
- Microcontrollers
- Robotics controllers
- Embedded development boards
- DIY automation systems
When connecting to a 3.3V logic microcontroller, check the Echo signal voltage requirements and use an appropriate level-shifting or voltage-divider circuit where necessary.
Important Note
Ultrasonic measurements can be affected by object shape, surface material, angle, temperature, air movement, and environmental conditions. Soft or irregular surfaces may not provide a strong reflected signal.
For precise electrical specifications such as operating voltage, current consumption, and exact measurement range, refer to the specification of the particular HC-SR04 module version.
